One zone with weak pressure almost always traces back to one of three things: a leak in that zone’s lateral line, too many heads on the zone for the flow it can deliver, or a faulty zone valve. The pump and the main supply are almost never the culprit. Here is how to confirm the cause in about five minutes.
You turn on the system. Most zones come up the way they always do. Then one zone fires and the heads barely lift. They dribble. The spray pattern that used to throw fifteen feet is now wetting a circle around the head. Maybe the last head in the run does not pop up at all.
Most homeowners pick up the phone at this point and start asking about the pump. I have walked plenty of yards where the homeowner was already pricing a new pump online. In every case it turned out to be something simpler. A pump that feeds three zones fine cannot suddenly fail on only one zone. That is the diagnostic shortcut nobody tells you, and it saves a lot of money.

How Pressure Actually Reaches Your Sprinkler Heads
A quick anatomy lesson, because the fix gets a lot easier when you can picture what is happening underground.
Water comes from your main supply (city water or a pump and well) through a backflow preventer, then into the manifold where your zone valves live. Each valve controls one zone. When the controller fires a zone, that valve opens, water flows through the lateral pipe for that zone, and pressure builds at each head along the run. The head only pops up when there is enough pressure behind it to push the riser through the spring.
If pressure is fine at the main supply but weak at one zone, the problem is downstream of the valve for that zone. That is the whole game. You are looking for somewhere between the valve and the last head where pressure is escaping or being restricted.
The 5 Most Common Causes of Low Pressure in One Zone
In rough order of how often I see them.
- A leak in the lateral line. A cracked pipe, a separated fitting, or a broken head is bleeding water into the ground before it reaches the rest of the run.
- Too many heads on the zone for the flow available. Common when previous owners added heads over the years without re-balancing the zones.
- A faulty zone valve. The diaphragm inside the valve is worn, debris is jamming it partly closed, or the solenoid is sticking.
- A clogged filter at the valve or backflow. Sediment, sand from a well, or hard-water grit narrows the flow into the zone.
- A cracked or chewed-up sprinkler head. A single broken head can dump enough water sideways that every head downstream of it loses pressure.
You will notice the pump is not on this list. Neither is the controller. If only one zone is weak and the rest are normal, the problem lives in the parts that are unique to that zone.
How to Diagnose the Cause in 5 Minutes
Walk the bad zone with the system running and work this checklist in order. Most fixes get caught at step one or two.
Are all the heads on the zone weak, or just some?
If every head on the zone is weak, you are looking at a valve issue, a clog at the valve, or a leak upstream of the first head. If the first few heads spray fine and the later ones drop off, you have a leak or a clog somewhere along the lateral. If only the last head fails, it is either that last head or a clog right at the end of the run.
Walk the zone slowly while it is running
Look for wet spots in the grass that should not be there. A leaking lateral pipe will saturate the soil above it within a few minutes of the zone running. The water will pool slightly or you will feel the ground turn squishy. If you see a wet patch with no head near it, you found your leak.
Check the head spray patterns

Pop the cap off the zone valve
If no heads on the zone are working right and you cannot find a wet spot, the next step is the valve itself. Shut off the main supply, unscrew the cap on the valve, and look at the diaphragm and the screen filter underneath. A torn diaphragm, a stuck solenoid plunger, or a filter packed with grit will all throttle the zone.
Inspect the backflow preventer
Last stop. The backflow on most residential systems has a small screen filter that catches sediment from the city line. If that filter is fouled, every zone downstream of it loses pressure. Usually the symptom is system-wide low pressure, but a partial clog can sometimes show up as one weak zone first.
How to Fix a Lateral Line Leak (Step-by-Step)
Total time needed: about 12 minutes.
- Step 1: Shut off the zone and bleed the line
Turn the zone off at the controller. Then open one of the heads on that zone (lift the riser by hand) to bleed standing water out of the line. Working on a dry pipe is much easier than working on a wet one.
- Step 2: Expose the leak with a clean square cut
Use a square shovel to cut a rectangle of sod about a foot wider than the wet patch in every direction. Lift the sod intact and set it on a tarp. You will lay it back down at the end and the lawn will heal in a week.
- Step 3: Dig down to the pipe
Use a hand trowel and your fingers for the last few inches so you do not stab the pipe with the shovel. Brush dirt off the top of the pipe until you can see the crack or the loose fitting.
- Step 4: Cut out the damaged section
Use a hacksaw to cut the pipe a few inches on each side of the damage. You want clean square cuts with no burrs. Wipe the cut ends dry with a rag.
- Step 5: Install the repair coupling
For PVC, prime both ends and the new fitting, brush on PVC cement, push the fitting on with a quarter-turn twist, and hold for 30 seconds. For poly pipe, slide on the slip coupling and tighten the stainless clamps. Let PVC cure for the time printed on the can before you pressurize.
- Step 6: Test before you backfill
Turn the zone on at the controller and watch the repair under pressure. If you see weeping, shut it down and rebuild the joint. If it holds, backfill in three-inch layers, tamping each one, then drop the sod back on top. Water it in lightly so the roots make contact again.
How to Fix a Faulty Zone Valve
Total time needed: about 10 minutes.
- Step 1: Shut off the main water supply
Find the main supply shutoff for the irrigation system (usually upstream of the backflow) and close it. You do not want pressurized water dumping out of the valve body the moment you crack the cap.
- Step 2: Mark the wire colors on the solenoid
Before you pull anything apart, snap a photo of the solenoid wiring. If you end up needing to disconnect it later you will know exactly how it goes back together.
- Step 3: Remove the valve cap or bonnet
Most diaphragm valves have four screws on the cap. Remove all four and lift the cap straight up. The diaphragm and spring will be sitting right there. Keep track of which side faced up.
- Step 4: Inspect and clean
Look for tears, swelling, or grit on the diaphragm. Rinse the diaphragm, the spring, and the screen filter underneath with clean water. If the diaphragm is cracked or curled at the edges, swap it for a new one from the repair kit.
- Step 5: Reassemble and test
Set the diaphragm back in with the same orientation, drop the spring on top, set the cap down, and tighten the four screws in a cross pattern (not in a circle). Turn the main supply back on, fire the zone at the controller, and watch the heads come up. A clean valve should restore full pressure immediately.
When to Call a Pro
I am a big fan of DIY irrigation work because most of it is genuinely simple, but there are a few situations where I will tell a neighbor to make the phone call.
- You cannot find the leak. If you have walked the zone three times and there is no wet patch, the leak might be deeper than typical residential digging (some installs run the lateral two feet down for freeze protection), or it might be at the valve manifold itself. A pro with a leak-detection rig will save you an afternoon of trenching.
- The valve manifold is buried in concrete or under a hardscape. If the previous owner poured a patio over the valve box (it happens), you need someone with the right equipment.
- You smell anything electrical or see corrosion on the valve solenoid. Wiring faults on a valve manifold are not dangerous in the way household wiring is, but they are easy to make worse if you are guessing. A licensed irrigation tech can trace the controller wiring back and isolate the bad leg in twenty minutes.

The single biggest cause of mid-season pressure problems is physical damage to heads and the fittings underneath them. A mower clips the cap, the impact travels down the riser, and over time the fitting at the base loosens or cracks. Now the zone has a small leak the homeowner cannot see, and pressure starts dropping a few weeks later.
Three habits prevent most of it.
